Weave your own basket

Kids love to weave!

Paper weaving is a simple craft and it can make many different types of projects.

This time, Miss Chai will teach you how to weave a basket.

1) You need:
a) craft knife
b) long ruler
c) many many strips of paper
d) tape / glue

2) Make the warp. These are the strips you weave in and out of.
Place a length of tape on the top and line up many strips side by side, attaching each one to the tape. Keep all strips straight, both along the top and sides.
Tips: You may cut the paper into strips after you stick the piece of paper to the tape.

3) Start with the weft. These are the strips you use for the weaving.
Starting at one edge of the warp.

4a) Slide the weft strip through the first slit, OVER the warp, through the next slit, under the warp, through the next slit, and so on, over and under, till you get to the other edge of the paper.
4b) Do the same thing with your second weft strip, except this time push the weft strip through the first slit so that it goes UNDER the warp, then over, then under, and so on, under and over, till you reach the other side.

5) Repeat step 4a and 4b until your warp became a sheet of checkered paper.
Tips: You can try to use different colours, widths and spacings.

6) Cut the paper into the size of making a basket.

7) Fold the paper into a basket.

8) Decorate your basket.

9) Miss Chai's own basket.
